How lovely, you found your way onto our Community forum and are no doubt snooping around in an effort to figure out what this elusive "gaming community" is all about.. and how you can join it.
Rest assured this thread should answer most of your questions, at least regarding the process of applying and (hopefully) your first few weeks as a trial member here.
Let us begin.. with a short overview of who and what we really are:
The Intrepid Society, a gaming community!
A community that caters to the needs of a varied group of people, playing various different games. Originally founded as a guild in World of Warcraft, <Intrepid Society> grew rather large in it's first year, leading to a wonderful community of people and a great feeling of purpose and achievement.
However, as time flew by, not only did we grow, we took note of a phenomenon that plagues quite a few WoW-guilds out there: disinterest with "the game". Instead of forcing the people who quit WoW to leave the guild, like most guilds do, we opted to keep those people around, as we grew so attached to one another.
The bonds of friendship were simply so strong, we did not want people to leave, nor did they want to themselves.
We noted something else as well.. those people still played games. In fact, they chose to play them with members of this community. In effect, forming <Intrepid Society> in other games.
At this point we decided to simply incorporate those other games into the structure of our community and embrace the simple fact that we, as a community of people, were growing "beyond the simple borders of a WoW guild".
And thus the community was established.
Now, we focus on having the separate games function and evolve the way they themselves want to.. while the overarching "community" that those games are a part of, simply functions as a communications tool, facilitating all the stuff the separate games and its players need to have massive amounts of fun.
Joining the Community
So you have read about us, maybe seen a video or two, perhaps you even know established members of our community.
And now.. you want to be part of this community.
Time to explain how people go about the way of applying and joining our community.
A word of warning: We take this process quite serious.
Step 1: Posting an application
When you feel confident enough (after the consumption of X amount of bravery-instilling substances) you need to go to the site forums to give us your application. You make a brand new topic on our Recruitment forum, where, in a well-structured manner, you display the various reasons why we as a Community, would want you to become part of us. Make this with this thought in the back of your mind when writing: "If I were in a guild/corp/server.. and someone I've never met before would want to become part of this.. what would I want to know about him/her that makes me go: ‘This person is amazing! He/She totally needs to get in!’”
Stuff like: - Personal Information. Very Important, this needs to be the largest part of your application. - Character(s) Information concerning whichever game(s) you are applying for. - How you got to know about us as a community. - Previous Guild/Corp/Server experience(s). - Your reasons for wanting to join us. - A photograph of yourself, this is not for anything other than letting the guild put a face to the name.
And a bonus section, for scoring extra points:
- Tell us a joke! - Give us a funny screenshot or picture!
And remember: The more information you put in the thread, the better your chances are of making it through the selection!, we really do like to see a LOT of information, especially in the personal information sections. Hobbies, likes, dislikes, your family, friends, what you do for a living. Really the more effort you put into it the greater your chances, as this gives us a much fuller picture of the person you are. Do use a spellchecker, and do read some of the other applications that have been posted to see what to do, and what not to do. If you are reading this and thinking "I really can’t be arsed with all this, it is just a game”, I regret that this community is just not for you.
Now, once you've made your post of epic proportions, your hit the *submit*-button and your application will be posted in this forum automatically (technology is amazing is it not?) Once that is done, members from this guild (and indeed any outsider) can see your application, comment, maybe ask you some questions and give their opinions. Maybe you stun us with a well-written and flawless application that sees you invited within seconds! Maybe our members feel the need to question you further to find out if you are indeed suitable to become part of this guild. Often you will be waiting for at least a few days for members to voice their thoughts. However very rarely will you be kept waiting longer than a couple of weeks. If at any point you still have questions, don’t be afraid to contact any of us in-game for a chat.
Step 2: Initiate Period
If you are lucky enough to be accepted you will receive a 1-month trial spot in the community, in which time you will have Initiate status. You will be treated just as everyone else is treated, but this period is just so the rest of our guild can see how you fit in with us. It is best in this time to become familiar with ALL of us, cliques just don’t exist in Intrepid Society.
Join in any events that you can, chat lots in guild/corp/server chat and on mumble. This period is just as much for you as it is for us. Check us out too; make sure we are as good as we claim to be!
During your 1-month trial, a feedback thread will be up on our forums where people can let you know how you are doing. Maybe you only ever get positive responses and fit in perfectly.. and maybe not. If people turn out to have an issues with you, that feedback thread is the place they will post it. This gives YOU the notice and the opportunity to work out the issues with said member.
Not only is this a fair way of going about it, the way Initiates deal with this is a great indication of how suited they are to our community.
At the end of the two weeks, a poll will go up on the Initiate’s thread and everyone in the Community can vote (Including yourself. Yes, that's right, you can vote "yes" on your own poll. Do it!) Votes of a negative result will not be accepted without full reason being given.
If successful, you finish your trial period and become a full member!
In parting, I leave you with an older episode of a vlog I used to do when we were still "only a WoW guild". It is a nice reference if you want some more insight and/or help with applying.
